Gaudeamus omnes in Domino, diem festum celebrantes sub honore beatae Mariae Virginis: de cuius Assumptione gaudent Angeli, et collaudant Filium Dei.
Let us all rejoice in the Lord, celebrating the feast day in honour of Blessed Mary the Virgin: in whose Assumption the Angels rejoice, and highly extol the Son of God.
The above antiphon from the Premonstratensian missal, sung beautifully by our schola, began our conventual Mass this morning as we celebrated the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Today is the Marian ‘feast of feasts’ in which we celebrate the consummation of the life of our Blessed Mother as she was given a foretaste of the glory of the bodily resurrection secured and began by our Lord himself. As Norbertines we celebrate today with particular solemnity as we recall that our Lady is Queen of the Order, and as written about previously many of our abbeys are dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Some more photos of our chapel prepared for today’s feast can be found here.
So let us celebrate this great feast with all due solemnity, remembering always the great mercy and bounty of God shown forth in his gloriously assumed Mother. During the sermon at our conventual Mass the Prior, Rt Rev Hugh Allan o.praem., reminded us that today we celebrate a second Mother’s Day dedicated to the heavenly birthday of the glorious and ever-virgin Mary. So let us not forget to speak to her today, and maybe even buy her some flowers.
